Coffee + Cards with Guest Designer Erika Post

I’m so happy to welcome Erika Post – Creative Manager at Catherine Pooler, back to the blog.  We’re teaming up and working with this lovely color palette:

What’s not to love about all those gorgeous colors?

First up is Erika:

Hello java loving friends!!  Erika here, Creative Manager for Catherine Pooler Designs and resident coffee fanatic. I developed a love for a hot fresh brew while living in Europe. European cafe’s became an obsession of mine and along with a friend, I spent perhaps too much time “having a natter over a cuppa”! As I sampled different cafes, I loved the moment when they would present their milky art creation to me with pride, preferably in a very large mug.

After returning stateside I joined my good friend, Catherine Pooler in her business and have enjoyed being able to combine my coffee love with my crafting love. One of the joys of my job is being able to work with our illustrators to bring coffee concept stamps and dies into life! Those latte art barista creations were recreated in the Coffee Shop Stamp Set. Once the ideas are turned into actual stamps, the froth on the brew is then seeing all the ways you use them to make different cards and paper projects. It’s almost as satisfying as a flat white!

For this card, I challenged my friend Amy to grab this fun “Java Fix” Color Combo of her CP inks. This one was inspired by the colors we chose for the Java Fix 12×12 Patterned Paper pack. I wanted this color combo to be cheerful and modern while also have a few brown shades to cover the coffee spectrum. When I got started, I thought I would like to add some colored strips to my card. Instead of just cutting them with my paper cutter, I grabbed the Sentiment Banner Dies, swiped my cardstock with ink, and then die cut the little banners. I really love the little dash marks on the banners and the texture that adds.

Next I stamped out a few of the coffee to-go mug stamps from the Coffee Shop Stamp Set in the different colors. I wanted the sleeve bit to look like cardboard so I also stamped one of the cups in Sand Castle Ink and then fussy cut the sleeve and glued it on my Deck the Halls cup. Deck the Halls is giving me the “Starbucks green” vibes.

I stamped my sentiment in S’mores and then clear embossed over that to give it pop and shine. I love the polished look of a clear embossed sentiment. I cut that out with a rectangle die and then a slightly larger one which I added more S’mores Ink along the edges to create a darker frame layer.  I think this helps anchor the sentiment.

I started to assemble the card and tried the arrangement in several different ways before I felt like I had hit the mark. I liked having the banner stripes and the sentiment block come off the white layer so I cut it down a bit smaller than I would usually have it.

For an extra pop, I swiped some It’s a Girl Ink on a piece of card stock and stamped the chalk scribble hearts from the Coffee Shop Stamp Set with clear embossing ink and then embossed them in WOW! Opaque White. Aren’t they the cutest? I like the additional color and interest they add to the card.

I popped it all on a Kraft Paper card base to tie in with the stamped sleeve. I like the natural texture you get from using a Kraft base and the warmth and contrast it adds.

So there you have it! My Java Fix color combo inspired card. I hope you will also grab some of these colors and be inspired to make another caffeinated project with us!

Don’t you LOVE Erika’s project?!!!!

Here’s how I was inspired:

I love the colors in the Java Fix paper collection!  Let’s chat about this card first:

I used two different panels for the background.  I added a vellum layer to soften the background so that the star of the show would be the Con Panna mug.  The whip has been cut away from the insert.  The sentiment, from the Coffee Shop set, has been heat embossed in white on vellum.

Next up is this one:

This project features two of the to go cups stamped in Shea Butter + Cummerbund.  I used Macchiato for the browns and ‘Good Mood’ has been fussy cut from Deck the Halls.  The white panel die cut is from the coordinating die set for Coffee Shop.
