This weekend I got mugged!! True story. My sister came for a visit and brought two of her friends, and I gathered some of my friends together and we had a whole friendly friend Pinterest-inspired party where I tried stamping on coffee mugs for the first time.
Supplies needed, you ask?
White ceramic mugs (I purchased mine from the dollar store)
Sharpie Oil-based Paint Markers (if it’s not oil-based, it will wash or peel off)
Stamps that aren’t too intricate/have large spaces for coloring
Now, there are many ways you can attempt to stamp on mugs and I probably tried them all in my quest to perfect the process. Here’s what I can tell you: there is no perfection. BUT the best method I found is place your stamp on a flat surface and roll the mug over the top of it.
If you mess up (and you will), you can quickly wipe off the impression with a damp paper towel. As you are rolling over the top of the stamp, rock the cup CAREFULLY up and down to get an impression on the entire curved surface.
Once my image left its inky little self on my mug, I outlined the whole thing in using the Sharpie paint marker.
Rather than color the whole thing, I made hundreds of tiny dots around the edges and then I switched to a lighter blue.
I used the same pointillism technique to color in the open spaces of my flower.
There aren’t exactly a million shades (or even 30 shades) of Sharpie paint markers, so I used a pink to add a little highlighting to my red. flower.
Once all of my friends were done mugging it up, we popped our mugs into the oven. In order to prevent your mugs from exploding everywhere and having to pick up superheated hot ceramic shards from the bottom of your oven, DO NOT PREHEAT THE OVEN! Put the mugs into a cold oven, turn it on to 350 degrees, and let the cups bake for 30 minutes. Then turn off the oven and let them cool.
BLAM! I now have one super pretty coffee mug to drink all of the delicious liquid motivation I need. And I made some great crafty memories whilst doing it!
Thanks for tuning in! See you next time on Wednesday Esspresso-sions!
