Brew and craft

Hello!! Dana here with a new installment of Brew & Craft Your Stash!! How are your fall coffee/tea creations coming along for the Fall Hop??? Perfect time to be using both your stash of crafty supplies and your stash of coffee and or tea!! Today I have some great ideas for using Fabulous Felt!!! If this is the first time you are seeing my feature or need a refresher, click here for my very first post, it gives a little background explanation on my feature!!

paper crafting

This week we are looking at Fabulous Felt in the Bonus Techniques section of the magazine Paper Crafting Tips & Tricks 2012. If you happen to remember I’m currently 2.5 hours away from home living in apartments on a college campus and only brought a limited supply of crafty stuff with me. On top of being a paper crafter I also love to cross stitch, so I keep floss, in progress projects, a few hoops, magazines and such in a tub in my car. The current project is inside my apartment. In that tub, I threw in my small collection of felt, mostly from Papertrey Ink, which I have had forever and really rarely use!! LOL!!! So, it worked out that I happened to have some on hand for this Felt feature!!!

In the magazine, Jessic Witty gives many ideas for using felts on cards!! Are you sitting down?!?! At least set the coffee down!! ……. I did not create a card for this post, or do any stamping!!! GASP!! Just shocking!! …. But I thought I would try something a little different, for me at least! But anyway, here are a few ideas from Jessica:

  • Layer felt over fabric, felt, paper …
  • Roll layers of felt for two-toned embellishments
  • Use dies to create shapes and frames
  • Layer felt behind a die cut for some cool texture
  • Break out that floss and embroider a cool pattern on the felt
  • Stitch felt together to create pockets
  • Die cut felt and use the negative space
  • Stamp! Yes, stamp on felt!! Keep it simple, though

So when I was thinking about this I thought about ornaments! Not my usual card making project, so for me this is different and I have some basic coffee die’s that I can use. The only thing, this is not fall themed as I hoped it would be. Once I looked at my felt I just don’t have many colors and not enough that I could say they were fall!!  So on to plan B!! After looking at my dies and colors I ended up making two ornaments!

w both 1

The first one I made with My Favorite Things Coffee Cup die. I used Scarlet Jewel and Autumn Rose Papertrey Ink felt and some basic white felt I probably got from Joann’s. I cut two of the lighter pink color, then the wrap from the dark pink and the cup top from the white.

The die set comes with a star pattern that punches out just the holes in the star shape. I used that on the wrap piece and then used 6 ply floss to stitch the star. With a little bit of floss, I sewed the wrap to one of the pink layers. Since this cup is pretty small I didn’t add any fluff (not that I have fluff!!) to the inside, I just attached the white top and then stitched the two pink cups together. Luckily I was able to match the colors of the wrap and cup with my extensive collection of floss!

For a hanger, I used some floss and made sure to stitch it at the top of the ornament. The ribbon I had was too big, but something thinner might work too.

For the other ornament, I went winter with it as I had Blueberry Sky and Pure Poppy from Papertrey Ink. From the red felt I used the mug die from Paper Sweeties Homemade with Love. From the blue, I cut two with a basic scalloped die. And then from the white, cut a few small snowflakes with Art Impressions Snowflake die.

I used white floss to add the snowflakes and the mug to one of the scallop circles. This time I wanted to add some fluff, but since I don’t have any I had some leftover fabric from some pajamas I made into shorts. I cut small strips of it and used it to stuff the ornament. I used white floss again for the hanger and stitched around the circle to complete the ornament.

If you have felt in your stash I encourage you to take a second look at it and make some cute coffee ornaments (Christmas will be here before you know it!!) or add some cool felt to your card!!

Thanks so much for stopping by!!

Dana

I love working with felt but haven’t done it for many years, and they are still in my storage room, with all DMC floss collection! I used to be an avid cross stitcher also. Such cute ornaments! Love the color combos, too!
